Canadian scientists are exploring the use of humor in the treatment of a patient in a medical institution.
According to research published in the April issue of UK-based Journal of Clinical Nursing, humor plays a significant role in even the most serious medical institutions.
Canadian scientists spent about 300 hours to conduct a survey of hospital staff, patients and their families and came to the conclusion that humor plays a significant role in shaping the command relationship and the emergence of “humanity” in care and support provided to their patients by medical personnel.
Researchers found that the humor used by medical personnel for various purposes. For example, to cope with a variety of dire situations, facilitate the establishment of professional relationships, both among themselves and with the patient, remove the embarrassment of the patient, to relax him etc.
“Some people believe the use of humor in medical centers unacceptable from a professional point of view, but our studies have proved that it’s a wrong thought,” said project co-author Professor Dr Ruth Dean from University of Manitoba: “Together with professional skills in a simple human participation, humor is an integral part of the process of treating in any medial center.”
