Scientists from the United States created a drug that can protect the human of radiation risk exploration.
Believed, that the new drugs will be fewer side effects with radiotherapy, to be appointed for cancer patients. The drug also could be used in case of a “dirty bomb” or with nuclear holocaust.
CBLB502 drug, which has already been tested on animals, runs a biological mechanism, which helps healthy cells to cope with radiation exposure. The data on new drugs published in the scientific journal Science. Now, the drug has be tested in clinical conditions.
The radiation kills the cells - with its exposure to changes in cells, causing them early programmed apoptosis or necrosis. With radiotherapy, which designate certain cancer patients, despite the fact that the radiologists are seeking only to irradiate a tumor, healthy cells are dying too.
Scientists have always wanted to understand why some cancer cells are not susceptible to radiation. The answer to this question gave an opportunity to develop a new drug. Its effect is based on blocking protein, launching cell suicide mechanism.
Testing the drug on animals revealed that CBLB502 protects against radiation healthy cells in the marrow and digestive tract. At the same time, this protection does not extend to the cancer cells.
Mice and monkeys, which injected a drug before a lethal dose of radiation to be (at least 45 minutes before exposure session, but no more than one day before), had a greater chance to survive and live longer than animals that did not give medicines .
During the blocking cells self-destruct mechanism, there is a risk that not all damaged cells will be killed and then they could degenerate into cancer. However, according to the scientists, in experiments on mice, there weren’t any signs of such a phenomenon.
Furthermore, the new drugs did not show any side effects. As it was announced, scientists sought to “teach” healthy cells to imitate cancerous cells to avoid self-destruction.
In doing so, scientists had a goal to ensure the temporary nature of this effect and the possibility of its abolition.
It was shown, that the new drug is effective when injection it as before radiation effects, as after it.
Shortly the drugs effects can be described as follows: CBLB502 reduces the toxicity of radiation, without diminishing anti- cancer therapeutic effects of irradiation.
British collaborator of the Centre for Research on Cancer Joanne Owens said that the new drug will help alleviate the condition of many cancer patients.
“If the protective mechanism of cells observed in animals, can be replicated in humans suffering from cancer, it will be an important step in reducing side effects in passing their courses of radiotherapy,” - she said.
