Plants may be useful in research on manufacturing vaccines for individual patients with follicular lymphoma, a type of Non Hodgkin Lymphoma.
Follicular lymphoma is still considered to be incurable disease. Progress of clinical medicine until recently did not result in an increase in life expectancy of patients, an average of 7-10 years. But recently, were added several new treatments methods. First of all, this is a use of monoclonal antibodies specific to the tumor cells, also developing a new vaccine for this type of lymphomas.
The main idea of the method is to use plants as a factory for quick and inexpensive production of vaccines, specifically tailored for each patient with follicular lymphoma. A small study was attended by 16 patients diagnosed with follicular lymphoma. Individual vaccine grown in tobacco leaves within 3-4 months. Starting from 6 months from the end of last month course of chemotherapy patients receive injections in the thigh during the half year. Some patients additionally imposed substances potentiating vaccines effect and immune reflex of the organism.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the safety and practicality of such method of treatment. And, according to results, immunotherapy does not really, injury, the scientists haven’t found some side effects. It is now necessary to conduct further research on this issue to assess the effectiveness of such methods.
