Premature babies significant risk of birth defects twice as high in comparison with the born-in-time kids. For better understanding, the link between premature births and birth defects, scientists studied data of 7 million infants born during 1995-2000 in 13 U.S. states. Most children were born in a period of 40 - a week of pregnancy. Kids born before 37 weeks of pregnancy are considered to be premature and are in the risk group of health problems including birth defects. Among the premature babies from 8% had congenital malformations, compared with 3% in born in time. Children, who were born between 24 and 31 weeks of pregnancy, are at highest risk of birth defects. Most of all, there are defects in the central nervous system. For example, spina bifida (arches nonunion of the spine) and cardiovascular system defect. Premature births account for about 12% of all births in the U.S., and birth defects occur in 3% of cases. It is therefore very important to establish the relationship between these events, believes Margaret Honein, the head of research at the Centers for Disease Control, Prevention’s National Center on Birth Defects and Developmental Disabilities. The cause of birth defects is not installed. The biggest impact has the combination of genetic factors and environmental influences. Already aware that smoking and obesity before pregnancy are risk factors for serious flaws development and premature births.
