As it was discovered, the drug for treatment smallpox may also protect the body from adenovirus.
Adenovirus is a cause of upper respiratory tract infection and one of the many viruses that cause ordinary colds. Today, there is no special drug directed against adenovirus.
In part, this is because so far not been able to create an appropriate model of disease in animals to test effect of the drug before its use in humans. Researchers from the Saint Louis University made two important messages. The first was that it found a suitable model (Syrian golden hamsters) for the introduction of adenovirus to the hamsters and checking the drugs on adenovirus action. This drug has been established for the treatment of smallpox and monkey pox, as well as for antiviral treatment of patients who have experienced transplantation.
The team of the San Lewis University in their experiments found that the drug protects hamsters from the adenovirus. In doing so, medicine hamsters gave injections before the virus and after it. Mechanism of drug action is to decrease significantly the possibility of the virus replicated (grow) in key organs, especially in the liver.
The disadvantage of this drug is its extreme toxicity, especially in the liver. Because of the severe toxicity of the drug it’s not available in pre-forming tool, which is not very convenient in treatment of viral infections.
