Dutch specialists have found that such a dangerous disease, as atypical pneumonia (SARS), can be easily prevented through… conventional interferon used for the prevention of influenza and other respiratory infections.
The experiments, conducted on monkeys in the Medical Center Erasmus (Rotterdam), showed, that the introduction of so-called interferon-alpha-long-acting, at 80-90 per cent reduces the severity of lung tissue damage caused by SARS virus.
In the case of people, this means that injections of interferon will reduce deaths from SARS nearly in 10 times.
But as scientist think, people interferon treatment can be associated with serious difficulties. The fact is that the experimental monkeys, which injected interferon and the SARS virus, the disease symptoms appeared within 2-3 days after injection - by which time the effect of interferon just reached its maximum.
In humans, the disease progresses in a different way - its incubation period, when there are no symptoms clinically expressed reaches two weeks. It is not ruled out that in reality “cure” disease with interferon could be impossible - would be virtually impossible to properly set the time necessary for the introduction of the drug.
